High pitched noise when spinning

Our 2yo washer has started this high pitched noise when it's spinning. I've asked a repair shop about it and they claim it can't be repaired and I need to buy a new one. I at least want to try and repair it myself. Anyone have a similar issue they repaired?

Hi @jays50728

What is the model number of the washer?

Does it do this on all spin speeds?

Sounds like a bearing is on the way out to be honest. Removing the top cover and running it on a spin might help in locating which one.

@jayeff It's an ELFW7637AT1 and yes it does it on all speeds but changes pitch as the speed increases.

My parents had a washer that started squealing, our hard water had congealed on the rubber bearing seal. The excess of hard water and the drying out caused squealing. But it could be a bearing like Ted mentioned, it may just need lubricant on the bearings. Your instruction manual should have a maintenance section &/or troubleshooting portion. Hi @jays50728

Here's the service data sheet for the washer.

To try and isolate the problem further, go to p.3 to view the procedure for Recalling last error code and check if any codes are being shown especially any in the range 55→5F.

If you find the problem and it's a faulty part that needs replacing, here's a parts list that is useful.

Locate the wanted part in the list and note the manufacturer's part number, that is shown for the part. Search online for the manufacturer's part number only, to find suppliers that suits you best.

Sometimes if you're lucky if you search on YouTube for (insert wanted part number) replacement, there may be videos that show how to remove/replace the part.

Thank you!

A new problem has started as well. Certain fabrics are coming out of the wash with snags in them. It’s only the stretchy “under armor” type fabrics. I’ve inspected the drum with a light and ran my hand over it throughly and can’t find what’s causing it.

@jays50728

Are you washing these fabrics in hot water?

Too hot and the fabric may shrink or distort which could lead to it slowly coming apart, which I suppose could look like it is tearing.

Spinning too fast shouldn't hurt the fabric as the fabric threads are quite strong.

Since you can't feel or see anything obvious in the tub and if you are washing in hot water, try using warm or cold instead and check if it still happens
