The original Xbox is Microsoft's first widely popular video gaming system. It has an easily identifiable black case with 'XBOX' emblazoned on the top and front. Repair is easy with common tools.

The Xbox boots up fine, going to the splash screen with a solid green light. When you open up the DVD drive, sometimes the trey opens up fine, other times it needs a little help with a paperclip. It usually closes ok. When the game disc is in, the front blinks green for awhile, but eventually goes solid green. You can feel vibrations on the DVD drive (I think the disc is spinning), but nothing on the screen indicates the disc is being read.

The Xbox does not give any sort of feedback on the screen that there's a problem. There are no error codes. It acts the same as if no disc was even inserted.

Hi!

Usually the drive it's laser is toast and need to be replaced. The problem now is, that almost no laser can be found for any disc drive model for the Xbox Original. Samsung drives do have this issue a lot, also the rubber band issue is common.

Replacing the drive is a possibility (you can replace the disc drive for any other model, PCB transfer is not needed), but again, very difficult to find. If you can find it, it will most likely cost around $90-100.

Sorry for the bad news :(.

I did the swap on a black Xbox like this but the console had sentimental value so it was worth it. I just picked whatever I could get since these lack drive pairing. I'd have never done it otherwise being a common black unit.

Yeah then it’s just worth it! Working drives are rare, so if you can find one that is still good, just go for it!

@dan0 I'm seriously tempted to get a spare or two with how hard they are to find at times.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

I have 3 of them in stock here. 2 Philips drives and 1 Thompson drive. When you see one, I would say, go for it. They are pretty rare, and it will be harder by the time to get one!

@dan0 Black Xboxes aren't worth the spend 8/10 times. Mine was different given it had sentimental value.
