Laptop won’t turn on – need help

Hi everyone,
I’m having an issue with a laptop that hasn’t been used in over a year. When I press the power button, the light comes on, the fans spin for 2–3 seconds, then everything shuts off. It repeats this cycle a few times. The screen stays completely black.

I’ve tried:

  • Starting without the battery, just with the charger
  • Holding the power button to drain static
  • Removing and reinserting the SSD, also tried without it
  • Entering BIOS, but it shuts off before I can get in

It shows that it’s charging when plugged in.

Any ideas on what could be wrong or what else I can try?

Thanks in advance!

@mihokisic check your power supply. Make sure it has the proper voltages. Check to make sure that connectors are not bend etc. Check the DC-in jack of your laptop. Make sure there is no corrosion, debris etc. that prevents it from working. Clean it of any debris etc, use a few puffs of air to clean it out. If none of this works, get a ammeter and see if your laptop draws any amperage from the charger.

You may also have to consider replacing the battery. A depleted battery can no longer be charged. However, it should not prevent your computer from coming on, if it is connected to the AC adapter.

it is also possible that this is a bad RAM module or a bad LCD. So remove the RAM, clean the contacts with a pencil eraser. Do it gentle so as to not destroy the module. Replace it and restart. If you have more than one module, remove it and just leave one connected.

To work on your Lenovo use the Lenovo B50 30 Hardware Maintenance Manual Let us know what you find out.

I've seen more then one bad battery short the laptop such it will not start - but that usually only occurs when it has a cell failure so it's not common. Most refuse to charge.

Thanks for the quick reply!

The power supply looks fine, connectors aren’t bent, no corrosion or debris.

I cleaned the RAM and the rest of the inside, which was surprisingly clean. I’ve only got one RAM stick, so I can’t really test if that’s the issue.

At this point, I’m suspecting the power button cable might be causing problems, but I’m not sure what the best way to troubleshoot that is. Any suggestions?

@mihokisic yes, that will be an issue that you can only check by opening your laptop up. It is possible that this is an issue with your motherboard not getting any power or the power button not working. Once you have it opened up, post some good pictures of what you see. We might have the schematic for this board and we might be able to find out where the power rails etc. are. Adding images to an existing question
