No Display but a little light on boot after replacing ssd.

Hey there!

Let me first tell you the long story about what happens:

I recently got a iMac 2012 off marketplace, and I was installing Monterey on it, but the problem was that its hard drive was corrupted to j decided to change it to a SSD. (Something to note it that there was a system for a different Mac already on it, and I didn’t remove it thinking I could just format it on disk utility).

After putting in the SSD into the iMac I connected one cable into the iMac which was the cable that transfers the data I think it’s called the lvds or something. And I sort of dropped the lcd and then the cable came off and stretched. I was really worried on what could have happened and the worst happened, there was no display.

I went to Apple but they had to parts for it to check if it was the cable or the lcd itself.

I tried resetting the smc I think it’s called by holding command option p r for 20 seconds but no difference.

They cable doesn’t seem to have any damaged

Reseating the cables didn’t work.

But I noticed when I click the power button during the chime the lcd like turns on, by that I mean like it just turns on but it’s very little of a difference then it would than being off but it turns on and during boot you can se that.

Flashing a flashlight behind the screen won’t work since it’s too thick.

The fourth led on the logic board (the very top one which I’m pretty sure is the one for the display) does not turn on but the other 3 do.

What happens when you connect an external monitor to the system? Does that display work.

I don’t really have a FireWire to hdmi cable so I don’t know, but I do here like the system working.

@din0saur - You will need either a mini DisplayPort cable or a 1/2 generation Thunderbolt to HDMI cable to connect an external display (TV?).

My guess is when the display fell it yanked on the logic board connector so it’s not making proper contact. Thats a common occurrence when the display slips. Likely need a new connector soldered on.

@danj hopefully not, do you think getting a different cable would fix it?

@din0saur - While it’s also possible the cable is damaged, my money is on the logic board connector as I’ve seen it often enough in the repairs I’ve done and even here.
