A1261 MBP won't turn on after screen repair

Hi,

I've just followed the iFixit guide to remove the LCD panel from my 2008 MBP (MacBook Pro 17" Models A1151 A1212 A1229 and A1261 LCD Replacement) to complete a repair (actually to re-stick the white card behind the Apple logo which had slipped and left an ugly black line across it)!

Unfortunately, having put everything back together, the MBP won't power on at all. I press the power button and there is no chime, no sound from the Superdrive, nothing. Not a display issue, just an entire laptop power issue. :( When I connect the MagSafe cable (with or without the battery connected) the charging light goes green. I've tried with the battery in and out. I've tried holding the power button down with no battery/cable connected for 10 seconds then booting again. Still nothing. And it was working absolutely fine before I stupidly decided to try and repair it - Could boot up on or off the charging cable, even on battery power. :'(

Any thoughts? Does the power button run through the right-side cable from the screen display (as in this picture https://guide-images.cdn.ifixit.com/igi/...)? Is it possible I damaged that cable when removing/re-seating the display?

And I know its an old laptop, but it was an eBay find in good condition and I was hoping to play around with it a bit longer than this!

Update (01/25/25)

Sorry, ignore me. ☺️ Seems like the battery was just completely dead. Screwed everything back together, left it on the charger for a few minutes and like magic it powered up again. 😀

One common occurrence is the PRAM battery dies so you loose the startup settings when you work on the system as the systems main battery of course was not present or the charger. See if that solves it MacBook Pro 17" Models A1151 A1212 A1229 and A1261 PRAM Battery Replacement as they do die just from age.

Thank you. I'll add that to my list of repairs! :D The system settings were all preserved so I think it was more an issue with the main battery here, but I could definitely make sure the PRAM battery gets replaced as well after this long!
