PS3 YLOD broken capacitor or bad power supply?

Hello everyone,

I need urgent help. So my fat PS3 is YLOD and I am trying to find the culprit. When I turn it on I get no video. The USB ports also don't work. After 1-2mins it gets the YLOD. i have already cleaned the PS3. Put in new thermal paste on both sides on the GPU and CPU and put in new thermal pads. While de-lidding the GPU I accidentally broke one of the tiny capacitor between the CPU and GPU. See the image. I also replaced the power supply with the aps 226 model. I still get the ylod. Please note that the longer I let the PS3 be off the longer it lasts before it ylod. Also like I said before the USB ports are not working either.

So what is the issue? Is it the broken tiny capacitor or a bad power supply?

Hi Sam!

Well, first you want to fix the tiny capacitor. That is the first step.

YLOD is usually caused by colt solder joints under the CPU/GPU. So there are multiple options you can perform to fix it.

1: Reflow! Usually this is a temporary fix, but is the most easy one.

2: Reball! This is the most difficult one, but is the best way to fix it! You do need some serious soldering skills and the right equipment to get it done.

3: Replace the motherboard! Most expensive one, but also very easy!

Please check this guide first: Yellow Light of Death Repair (this is a reflow).

I would try that one first and see how it goes. Otherwise you need to choose to either reball it (or let someone do this for you) or replacing the motherboard.

If you have any questions, please let us know!
