Troubleshooting and fixing replacement laptop battery installation

Bought a replacement FM08-12pin for my HP Omen laptop because the old battery wasn't charging. It got to the point where I couldn't even run the computer plugged in.

When I installed the new battery, I definitely bent a pin. I gently coaxed it back into place, and I believe they are all fine, but I've never gotten the laptop + battery working. I plug it in to let it charge, but it never seems to charge. My power supply shows 19.5V (which is correct) but my kill-a-watt meter shows it drawing only 0.01-0.04 amp. The led next to the power socket on the laptop lights for a few minutes, then goes out.

I've searched for, but not found, the pinout for this battery.

I'm wondering if the problem isn't even the battery, but the electronics between the power socket and the battery.

Any advice on how to troubleshoot this would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Paul,

Can you please include the full model number of your laptop? I've recategorized your question under the HP Omen 17-an000 Series laptop, as that's the one that matches the battery you listed, but please verify that's correct.

Once we know the model number we may be able to locate repair and parts guides to your computer that will help us try and figure out what's wrong with it.

Hi Jerry,

Yes, it is Model 17t-an100, Product ID 2XP14AV

Thanks!

Paul

And thanks for recategorizing it. Somehow I missed that when viewing the categories!

@paulfaul With confirmation of the model number, I located the service manual for your laptop, but unfortunately it doesn't go into detail about the schematics of the motherboard, so it's not going to be of any help with figuring out the power issue.

Hi @paulfaul

If the motherboard make and model is a Quanta DAG3BEMBCD0 (possibly shows Model G3BE on the board), I couldn't find a free download for the board schematics but found this website where you can purchase it for a reasonable price.

The schematics would show the battery connections and also the path and components in the battery charging and management circuit.

If the board is a different model (perhaps not just a different revision of the same model), what is the model number of the board in your laptop?

Thanks. I did some more searches and came across this site which told me the pins of the battery.

i had put my old battery in after making the post above so it sat charging for about a day. Also, I noticed that the LED where the power supply remained cycling on and off (maybe a 1-2 min cycle, I didn’t measure it) after the 24 hours of charging, while with the new battery it cycles on and off a handful of times then stops. When I took the V- (black) to V+ (red) measurements while plugged in, the old battery showed a steady voltage (I should have written it down but did not). The computer actually started to boot, but I got a CMOS battery error and then the computer lost power. Further research shows the CMOS is powered by the battery pack, not a button battery on the motherboard. At this point the voltages at the battery were down around 1V.

I’m going to try the new battery pack again, let it charge at least 24 hours. And see what I get for voltages. Perhaps my new battery is junk.

I’ll follow up…

Hi @paulfaul

If you haven't already done so, try uninstalling the Microsoft ACPI compliant control method battery divers in Device Manager > Battery and then restart the laptop in the normal manner which allows Windows to reinstall them and check.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

That would require a battery with enough charge to boot the laptop...

After 12 hours of the new battery stitting plugged in, I'm getting 1-2 V across the different red terminals and the charging LED continues to remain off; not even cycling on and off.

I just ordered another replacement battery (this time from ifixit). Fingers crossed.

@paulfaul

Apologies. My mistake.

If the replacement also doesn't work (hopefully it does) you may have to get the schematics
