Cracked screen - difficulty level to change it myself

Hello,

I recently had a very noticeable crack on my ASUS TUF Dash F15 screen due to an object that fell on the back of the computer and dented the back. I have never disassembled a computer or changed a screen and I wanted to know if the operation was very complicated or not on this model ? I would like to save myself $200/300$ in bills to have it repaired by someone else.

How do I find a reliable site in Canada to order a new screen ? Do you know what the average prices are for the screen of this model ? Do you have any recommendations for screen models ?

I put all my savings into this computer and I am stressed about finding it in a bad condition/tampered with/stolen/lost if I give it to a repair store. I am afraid that they will break my computer even though it has been working perfectly for 2 years and only the screen is damaged...

(If you ever have any YouTube tutorials for changing the screen of this model step by step, I'm interested, I haven't found much for the moment.)

Screen - depends on the model, there appears to be 4:

3 use the same screen, the 4th is higher quality.

As for doing the replacement, I've not replaced this model screen, however it is doable by taking care and checking the maintenance manual usually helps. Need the model to link the manual.

Edit: Also, there may be other damaged parts: e.g. hinge, the top-cover. If lugs are broken, etc

For the computer model, it says on the label: TUF517Z but it doesn't seem to match the model names on the site you sent me, so I wouldn't know which one to choose...

Edit: the top cover is indeed a little damaged and sunken, I would have to make sure that changing the screen will not damage the new one...

Yes sorry for this somewhat confusing information, I looked everywhere (label on the back, computer settings...) but I did not find any places with more details on the name apart from what I have already written...

The base case and the LCD cover of the manual look exactly like my PC (and identical color for the red triangle, same air vent) so I think it is indeed this model.

Okay, I will try to follow all your advice and see what is indicated on the back of the screen to buy a compatible model. I looked at the manual and although it is detailed, I also find it a little scary and I would like to avoid breaking my computer... If I ever feel that it is beyond my skills, I will bring it to the store to have it repaired. But I would really like to learn so I will try.

@ninasimons Based on the last pictures it turns out the model information we needed to use was on the right side of the label. By using the number TUF517ZM I was able to locate the correct support page for your specific laptop. I will now update my original answer with the correct information.

As it turns out, this one that I originally posted is correct for your laptop. Here's a link to the support page where you can find other documentation such as the user guide and upgrade manual.

Although the service manual shows the display already removed from the laptop, based on my experience I don't think that's necessary. From the looks of things, I'd say the whole thing can be done simply by going to page 28, removing the bezel, then moving on to page 29 where it shows how to remove the screen adhesive and then take out the LCD. I don't think you actually need to do Step 1, where they say to remove the hinges; I see nothing in the photos that would be obstructed by leaving them in, but ultimately you'll have to judge that for yourself once you get in there.

As far as getting a replacement LCD, my advice would be to follow the instructions up to the part where you flip the screen over, but don't disconnect the cable. What you'll want to do instead is to look on the back of the LCD for a manufacturer's label. Snap yourself a picture of it, then you can put it back together temporarily until you have a replacement screen in hand.

This advice relies on the fact that unlike cell phones, laptop manufacturers rarely manufacture their own screens; they almost always buy off the shelf parts. So what we're looking for here is that label showing who manufactured the screen and their model number. If you search for a replacement part based on that information, you may come up with more options than you would just searching by your Asus model number, although I would suggest trying both just to maximize your options. If you add a picture of that label to your question we can help you search.

I went through the support information for that model as best I could, but nothing I found gave a part number for your display. We may be able to make more progress if once we have pictures of your laptop's model label and the display model label.

I will buy a repair kit to have the right tools and do things properly. I will also try to find someone in my contacts who could advise me while I replace the screen.

The links you provided will really help me! I think I have found the right screen for the replacement so I will just wait until I can open the computer and check the manufacturer's label as you advised me.

You mentioned that it may not be necessary to completely remove the computer or the hinges. So to summarize, I should simply open the computer, disconnect the battery, gently peel the glue off the screen, disconnect the screen, put the new screen and reconnect it then put the battery back in and reassemble the computer? Am I forgetting a step according to your experience?

@ninasimons I think you've got it just right. If you get into it and find that for some reason you do end up having to remove the entire display assembly from the base of the laptop, you can always go back and follow the instructions to do that; you won't be any worse off; I'm just thinking it's not necessary from what I can see.

I had one last question, do you know what the plastic tips on the top left and right of the screen are called ?

I edited the picture in my post below (the one with the computer turned upside down) so you can see what I'm talking about, I added red circles on the left and right of the picture, I think you have to open it wide to see them properly.

I don't know if it's the hinges but one of them moves a lot and I think I'd better buy a new one but I don't know what to type in Google, nothing looks like that when I look on the internet...

@ninasimons Those should be the hinge covers, although they could also be part of the top cover on the rear side of the display. If you open up the screen and look at the back you might be able to tell if they're separate parts or connected to the display cover.

If one of those has movement, it could be the hinge is working its way loose and could need to be replaced or tightened. You would have to take off the bottom of the case to find out.
