The Nintendo DSi is the third iteration in the Nintendo DS line, and made its debut in Japan in late 2008.

Bottom screen flashes, then console turns off

When I try to turn my DSi on the bottom screen flashes then the console turns off. After doing some research, I learned that this is because there's an error with the top screen connection.

I bought this off eBay for repair practice, so I don't know the history but there does appear to have been water damage in the past. I have cleaned the affected areas very thoroughly, and as far as I can tell they're as clean as I can get them. I also checked the top ribbon cable for damage but my untrained eye couldn't find any noticeable tears. And I've reseated the connection more than once, but the issue persists.

Here's what the area looks like now: https://imgur.com/a/0uigG79

Before I commit to replacing the top screen entirely, is there anything else to check for?

This probably sounds obvious, but make sure the DS is fully charged. Make sure the charging light lights up as well because the bottom screen also flashes when the system tries to boot but doesn't have enough power.

@bc2179 Not obvious to me I guess! I guess I assumed that meant it had some power. When I plug in the charger the orange light flashes briefly then goes off. So something wrong with the battery or charging port maybe?

EDIT: I just tried turning it on again, and now nothing happens (no screen flashing). Did plugging it in short something out, or drain the remainder of the battery or something?

@bc2179 @dan0 Okay so the charging light issue was my bad, the wire of the power board connector was being pinched (I hadn't fully slotted it in the little groove). I fixed that and was able to charge the DSi fully. The screen still flashes, so power isn't an issue. I've reconnected the top screen ribbon cable a few times so I'm preeetty sure that's not the issue, but I'll go in and really make sure it's snug. If it is, does it sound like the screen itself is faulty and needs to be replaced?

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

Alright, glad that you solved that one! The issue is in the ribbon cable of the upper screen. This one is fused with the upper screen and so you need to replace the upper screen completely yes. If you are like 100% sure it's connected properly then a replacement is required, sorry!

@dan0 No worries, it'll be good practice! Thanks for confirming that this is most likely the issue!

Hi Alec!

I recognize this issue. When 1 of the screens flash and the console goes directly off, means that one of the screens aren't connected properly OR there is a issue with 1 of the screens it's ribbon cable.

In your case, the bottom screen flashed, this means that the issue is in the upper screen. You might want to double check the ribbon cable and make sure it's all the way in (it goes deeper in there then most ribbon cables do). If this is the case for sure, then replace the upper screen to fix the issue (then there is a problem with it's ribbon cable, best to replace the screen completely).

Regarding the orange charging light that goes directly off, could be caused by a bad battery.

EDIT: I recommend to replace the battery first and see how that goes.

Please let us know how it goes!
