At least with your current error, the printer can still be used but 1700 means the waste ink pad is ALMOST FULL. That said, it's usually not far behind when you get the 1700 error. The fatal error is 5B02 and its variants (such as 5B00) which point to the waste ink pad being full.

Getting to the pad on most Canon printers requires complete disassembly, which includes removing the printhead mechanism in most cases. Some of the lower-end models (like the MG series) have it on the side, but the layout commonly used in your printhead style is on the bottom. Yours has 3 pads:

  • A pad for the service station (Found it on Aliexpress)
  • The main absorber pad on the bottom -- Unable to find it (you can probably clean this in a bucket of warm water in a mop bucket you do not mind staining)
  • Platen waste ink pad (usually doesn't need to be changed, but sometimes required) -- Not able to find the parts, clean it in hot water with the primary pads

To reset the counter, use WIC Reset Utility or try and see if the Canon service tool is available for this printer due to a leak. If you can't find the Canon tool the WIC keys are $10 each, but check compatibility before you purchase the full reset key and see if it shows up in WIC.
