No sound from internal speakers

Block Image

6 weeks ago internal speakers stopped working - 100%. I hardly ever use them so no chance of blowing them or anything like that.

Computer works perfectly - except w/o a connected speaker (or even fake headphone jack) videos will not play (typical for this type of problem).

I started with the easy stuff.....and went bit by bit. Apple Hardware Test says everything is fine. I then tried their new "repair it yourself" hardware test using my iPhone. This also checked out in the general test - BUT, the Audio test seemed to detect a problem - but not specifically as the drop down said something about the microphone (which all works perfectly). Perhaps that app just does not diagnose to the proper level....although hard to believe.

Today I backed up and reset the computer to factory....of course, that didn't fix it either. Apple online chat knows much less than I do and the first attempt at an Apple Service Center (not an Apple Store) was "you have to leave it here".

It's amazing that even a diagnosis seems to escape Apple - although I will make one more try at a real Apple Store and see if their tool works better than the Self-Repair software.

My initial thoughts were a software issue - but I think that is now less likely, so the question becomes which part I might need to repair? Is there a single board which would stop generated sound from making it to the internal speakers (but allow it to go everywhere else)?

Looking at the Output audio settings under the Sound prefs what do you see? Do you see the speakers.

Then go to the About This Mac and click on the System Report button to open it up, click on Audio and then click on Built-in Output. Post a snapshot here so we can see it as well.

Of course....all the speakers are shown as normal, volume can be adjust and so on. They show up normally on Sound control panels....and they are reported by the System report at totally normal.

As mentioned, it's been through Apple Hardware AND the super-duper M1 Self-Repair Diagnose (using my iPhone as 2nd device).

This is definitely a tough one. I cannot find a single instance online of similar ever fixed. I've tried safe mode, another user!

Today I factory reset entire computer.

No go.

@craigissod - Well that’s good, so the issue is either within the amplifier logic or a loose wire within the analog side of the circuit.

Do you often use the headphone jack?

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

I doubt I have used the headphone jack for an hour in the total 2+ years.

Yeah, it does sound like a simple bad connection of some sort - which is not easily repeatable (or many others would have the exact problem).

It may be a waste to bring it to Apple - likely they would want to switch out the entire board(s) that contain all that stuff.

Do you agree that it's likely they won't know what it is - until they take it apart? If that's the case I may either live with it or take it to a non-Apple shop that once fixed my trackpad on an older model. They might, at least, take it apart and see if moving anything obvious makes it work, etc.

Ran every test existing - took to Apple Store to be 100% sure.

Same deal. They are unable to fix it and would prob swap out logic board for $800.....a real no-go for me.

I think I will just live with it and eventually sell this - many buyers won't mind since they use headphones or ext speakers most of the time anyway.
