MacBook Air a1466 turns off when charger is disconnected
Mid-2013 (1.7 intel core i7?) i think, still have it on high sierra.
I’m not entirely sure where this originated, but i know it began with it randomly shutting off once, then a few more times soon after i started the laptop. A Google search said that i should clean out the fan because it is shutting off due to overheating so i did this ((it seemed random enough that it was likely, and i couldn’t hear the fan)), but i didn’t disconnect the battery. I’m not entirely sure when this current conundrum specifically started, but probably one of those random shut offs had it stay at 80%, and now whenever i disconnect the charger, it shuts off. Turning it back on brings me to the same fate each time.
- I’ve tried a bunch of different ways of restarting the SMC thingy, but i may have missed a couple/conducted them incorrectly. Many sites say that i need to disconnect and reconnect the battery to do this, but i don’t want to open up the back again if i can. - I’m pretty sure the battery is fine, not perfect but far from dead. - The system report is telling me that it is not charging and coconutBattery that it is charging with 0 watts, but otherwise that it is at 80%, not charging, but connected to a power adapter. I restarted with a recovery reset and it said that the battery is at 76%, seconded again by coconutBattery and a system report.
In all, i’m confused. I bet there’s an issue with the software getting confused or some mumbo jumbo, but i really don’t know.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Edit: Also, closing the laptop lid used to shut it off ((i think that was whilst it was shutting off randomly)), but that doesn’t do it anymore.
I forgot to include this last night, but my charger is a 45W Magsafe 2 Adapter, and it doesn’t seem to be doing anything ((it doesn’t get very warm at all while in use, when that usually is the case)).

I had a very similar situation with a 2017 MBA recently. It turned out there was a faulty SMC chip and 2 resistors or something that communicated with the battery power. The power from the battery was not getting to the board and caused immediate shutdowns when disconnected.

@livfe Thatttt would make a ton of sense – it seems as if the 76% battery i mentioned is staying the same whenever i turn it back on. I do wonder how that would happen seemingly out of the blue, or if i caused it by opening the back lol. How did you troubleshoot it/how would you do so?

@shark35408 A tech guy here took a look at it, we changed the SMC and also 2 resistors or whatever they are called and now it is working fine again.... The original battery would drain very quickly and was the likely cause of the issue. He traced the power from the battery to the SMC lines and found the problem.
SMC Issue or deeper issues? - How to fix?
The problem is now with a faulty LCD, which upon Apple Diagnostics reports a problem with the fan going full speed, I will update that post when I have found a replacement to test. The fan issue can also be related to the SMC...

@livfe That’s what i figured, the functions the SMC performs + what’s been happening line up pretty well. My battery could deffo be the problem tho, it drained pretty quickly before, and since the most recent shut down i’m getting told to service my battery ((scratch that, that was there for a second + is now gone :P))
