@bentc yes you can, but it's a PITA. The touchscreen is glued to the LCD. Use this guide Nintendo 3DS XL Touchscreen Replacement to remove the display. Then you will have to "peel off" the digitizer. Use something like an exacto knife or similar and cut along the glue line between LCD and digitizer. Just don't break your screen......
Since you have not yet ordered a replacement, check the difference in cost between a complete display assembly and just a LCD. If the difference is not too much, consider purchasing the complete display. Saves you headache and time and almost guaranteed to work vs having to mess with the digitizer.
