How to use unresponsive 2015 iMac as external display

I recently tried to update my 2015 iMac to the latest compatible OS. Immediately after downloading the update, it would not reboot. Genius bar says sorry, its a hardware failure (and supposedly nothing to do with the software update).

The display turns on. But apple says this model is not compatible as an external display to connect my Macbook pro. Do I really have a brick on my hands? Shame to toss a perfectly good screen. Is there any way to use it as just a screen and connect my Macbook pro or other device?

Thank you,

Armen

Well The tech gave you a half truth! He is correct as is the system can’t run in this state as such the needed graphics services to push the image to the screen is not working.

So… you will need to replace the logic board to a different board to convert the display into a standalone display. Now the hard part as Apple 5K displays in this series use an odd setup so you need to find the driver board which can support it. I can’t speak on the quality of this board but it’s one of the few 5K universal hd HDR Freesync 60hz LCD controller board kit R9A18 For iMac A1419 LM270QQ1 LM270QQ2 LCD screen test driver board
