Display black but powers on and functional

Hello,

I have a 2019 Model A2159 Macbook Pro 13 inch with touchbar. Starting in October the screen has been faulty. Vertical colored lines were on the right side of the screen, then black lines started to form blocking the display. These symptoms increased over time until a week ago when the display started to flicker and glitch. I remember this glitching starting when the laptop was fully open, until eventually the display went completely black which is still its current state today.

Everything besides the display seems to be working. I can use the keyboard, change the volume, and log in just without the display.

I’ve tried to reset the NVRAM, SMC, safe mode, etc. but the display wont come on.

I’ve read up on flexgate but I’m not sure that applies to me. Apple states that there is a coverage repair program for a similar issue but that its covered for 2016 and 2017 models.

Is this a known issue for my specific model? What steps should I take to fix this?

Thank you!

Sadly, your symptoms point to a damaged display assembly. Did you bang or sit something heavy on the systems lid or have a snap on shell cover.

To prove it you should still be able to use an external monitor (I think that’s how your working now if I understand what you’ve done so far).

Here’s the needed part MacBook Pro 13" Retina (Mid 2018-Mid 2019) Display Assembly and here”s the guide to put in on MacBook Pro 13" Two Thunderbolt Ports 2019 Display Assembly Replacement

For the sake of argument if the displays ribbon cables where damaged you would still need a new display as these cables as seen in Steps 20 & 21 the bigger two cables are the display cables the smaller two are the camera and the display backlight power cables. These are all part of the display assembly and can’t be replaced.

Hi Dan, thanks for the comment. I forgot to add that before the screen went completely black, there was a few minutes where the stagelights were visible and white, and the right half of the screen was dark with some light spots.

Also, when I opened it up today after a few days of leaving it, the screen did turn on and the apple logo and green vertical lines were visible, so the screen was on. Once I opened it fully the screen then went black and I couldn’t get it to work since.

Based on all of this, is it still not a flexgate issue? I’m persisting on this as I would like to see if Apple could potentially give me a warranty exception to fix this. Otherwise I would be interested in getting one this site’s assemblies to do it myself. Thanks again.

@chilling35632 - Let’s define what FlexGate was, it only effected the 2016 & 2017 13” MacBook Pro systems. So clearly the backlight issue Apple had with a short ribbon cable is not your issue here. In any case Apple was replacing the display assembly, while some tech tried to patch the backlight cable in these systems the fix was not very good and often failed soon afterwards. We had a small number of cables which could be replaced but the needed skills and tools was not something a person would have (think brain surgery level skills). So that was the Apples FlexGate mess.

While your issue could be damaged cables as well, this is related to an event which damaged them. As I expressed a good bang, something pressed on the lid causing it to crack, hard cases which clip over the edge being the larger causes. The one I didn’t give you was the front chin plate under the screen got crushed by closing the lid on a paperclip or something.

So the damage is done, fixing things requires a new display no matter what did you in. At best we could call it son of FlexGate😫 Apple won’t fix this under warranty or extended warranty.
