Won’t boot up - tried Recovery and does not find MacHD

Good morning,

The IMac is actually a late 2015 27 5K. I sold it to a friend 6 months ago and now it gives him the prohibit sign. I managed to eventually enter in recovery mode but there is no MacHD volume listed. I have run first aid on all the volumes and they cannot repair. I tried also to erase System to re-install and that didn’t work either. Tried to re-install Monterey but that stuck at 98 hrs for download and log message that it couldn’t find files? Is this the hard disc really dead or is it possible there is a corruption in the hard disk or should I try to boot up from an external ssd if I create it. I bought the studio and have Ventura installed but I can download the copy of Monterey from that Mac. Tried everything and am now grinding my teeth! Would really appreciate your advice. Thanks

Dawn Simonelli

Yes you can encounter that, this is do to the version of macOS offered by Apples Internet recovery server. What happens is your system ran Sierra or older which uses GUID/HFS+ Vs High Sierra and newer which uses GUID/APFS. Simply put the recovery is the older and your drive which is now running is newer!

To fix this you need access to a second Mac to create a bootable OS installer with the same version of OS you are currently running, setting up a freshly Mac formatted USB thumb drive. Copy the installer to it and then convert it to be bootable.

Down load the needed OS from here How to download and install macOS and then follow this guide to convert it Create a bootable installer for macOS
