cd/dvd drive is missing from my system

Dell Inspiron 1525 does not see the cd/dvd drive. I can open the drive, but when closed, the drive light flashes several times and nothing happens.

What Operating System are you running on your Dell?

marsyoung, check your BIOS on startup. Make sure your drive is enabled.

Got it fixed - finally read a suggestion to check that dvd drive is seated firmly in the laptop - was slightly dislodged. Thanks to all for your advice!!!!

Power off, flip it over and remove/re-insert the drive. I've seen optical and hard drives across various brands and models where the drive will get slightly loose.

I'm not sure why you recommend changing the Lens. The fault stated is that the CD/DVD drive is not present and not that it is unable to read discs.

Assuming that you are running Windows on your Dell, as this is a common problem, then there is a Microsoft FixIt application that usually resolves the missing DVD drive issue. Below is the link http://support.microsoft.com/mats/cd_dvd...

If this does not work then there is also a registry fix, removing the upper/lower filters. This can be done by following the directions below;

''Run Command Prompt (type CMD in the Start Menu on Vista/7)

Type in "regedit" without the parrenthesis then click ok

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE

Then SYSTEM

Then CURRENT CONTROL SET

Then CONTROL

Then CLASS

Then find {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

The whole thing looks like this:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

Then delete the upper and lower filters that appear on the right hand side.''

Hope this helps,

Wes
