SSD swap from dead MacBook to different MacBook

My macbook pro mid 2015 just now began refusing to start up (if anyone has any advice on what i can do about this, that would be greatly appreciated) & i was wondering if it was at all possible to take out the ssd of this now dead macbook & put it into another macbook to have it continue like nothing happened.

If so what macbooks would be compatible for a swap like this?

Thanks for any help anyone can provide

hello Zyla,

almost any previous model will work with this drive (appropriate reductions are available on the market - drives between models differ mostly only in the order of pins and the mounting slot - the rest is identical). You can always use a drive with an external usb case and enjoy the drive (also compatible with any, even the latest models). However, I suggest you repair your old computer. This 2015 is still in price and its capabilities do not differ significantly from products even from 2020.

Thanks for the replay, I would use an external ssd case but its my understanding that, that will only save the files on the ssd & not things like applications or their login settings, which I only have access through this now dead computer.

Do you have an idea of how much a repair would cost? From some googling I've seen quotes upwards of 300$ which at that point I could get a new refurbished macbook pro, as long as swapping in my current ssd would work without problem.

every computer, mac, pc even linux has the ability to boot from an external drive. With a little modification, you can run or at least access your data from this macbook on any other computer. Valuing your problem will be difficult without additional information. Sometimes such a repair costs nothing, sometimes it is better to buy a new computer. It all depends on the specific case. I hope you understand it.

use the search engine, you will surely find a good specialist who will repair your computer for a reasonable amount.

Hi Zyla,

Mac’s use a custom blade SSD so you will need to stick with another Mac. Your systems slot offers four PCIe/NVMe Lanes so ideally I would stick with either a 2014 or 2015 MacBook Pro, either 13 or 15” if that is desire.

It might be possible to repair your system! Given its age you may only need a new battery, if your system is in good shape otherwise it maybe worth finding someone local who can check your system.

I'm going to the apple genius bar later today to see what they say, but I suspect it's not the battery, but I could be wrong.

Do you have an idea of how much a repair would cost? From some googling I've seen quotes upwards of 300$ if I need my board repaired, which I believe is the case, which at that point I could get a new refurbished macbook pro, as long as swapping in my current ssd would work without problem.

@Zyla Xabi - Repair is different from replace! Repairing the logic board could be cheaper as it could be just a burnt component or two. While much easier for many (and Apple) replacing the logic board can be expensive!

What I would do is either hook up the system to a bench power supply or a fresh battery to see if the system responds. That assuming the system did not have liquid or other physical damage.
