Hi John,

The situation you find yourself in happens when the LCD display hardware fails but the computer's graphics chip is fine. In that case the video signals are coming out of the GPU, but the internal display cannot show a picture while the external circuitry is fine.

If you put a flashlight up against the screen in a darkened room and can make out an image, that indicates the backlight has failed. A backlight problem could be caused by a problem on the motherboard, the display cable or the backlight itself.

With no picture, the prospects darken. While it could be a cable issue, generally the solution is to replace the display. Unfortunately Apple has basically made their displays unrepairable; you cannot open it up and replace just the LCD independently of the touchscreen and/or the rear case, so the only way to fix it is to replace the whole assembly. @dadibrokeit - the unibody’s can be checked by placing the light onto the lids Apple logo which offers a better direction of illumination.

Often the logic board LVDS connector gets wet causing it to short out burning the fuse.
