Apple's October 2020 refresh of its iPad Air tablet, sporting an A14 Bionic processor, a 10.9" screen, a new design, and in-button TouchID.

Anyone know what the apple store "Magnetic Test" is?

i have an AIR 4, that apple will exchange (due to some oddball charging issue) but they will do what they call is a "magnetic test" to make sure the product hasnt been tampered with... someone told me, they put a piece of "paper" on the ipad... not sure what that means... are they checking for the magnets that are inside the air 4 (and there are lots of em) i dont know... they couldnt do it, cause at the time didnt have one in stock to replace mine... and that made even less sense

thanks

mitch

Almost sounds like they are testing to see if, like when an iPad case is closed, it locks the device. Not sure how that would show whether the device was tampered with or not... Gotta love Apple.

maybe, why couldnt they do it to my ipad, vs saying the need to have the replacement 1st?

well i do know this... there is a magnet that is attached to the GLASS, and if you replace the glass...

i that might be missed (as one has to move the magnet over) not sure... need "inside" info :)

thats it!

i bet the compare the magnets, which looking at the ipad air tear down, there are lots of them...

now how they can tell tamper, im guessing people dont put that 1 that is attached to the screen itself, when they replace screen, but if someone just replaced battery, and re-installed screen, that wouldnt be known... unless an oddball magnet in the battery pack

Well, first off, what they are most likely testing for is wether the ipad has been opened/tampered with or not, because if it has they will probably say that the charging issue is caused by tampering. I assume what they mean by a "paper" they mean a piece of magnetic sensitive viewing film, this is a film that is sensitive to magnetic fields and when placed over something it will show the outlines of magnetic parts. How this can be used to determine if the ipad has been opened? I don't really know. but most likely they have magnets positioned in ways that they can tell if the case was opened after it left the factory.

I dont know why they wouldn't be able to do it til they had one in stock, but probably it is because they want to make sure they have one to send back to you as soon as possible.

If you are interested, there are several cool videos on youtube that explain magnetic viewing films

Sorry I am not an expert on any of this, just making educated guesses, but i hope this is helpful!

Yes there is a special sheet which can show the magnetic flux lines I have a small sheet to check Hall sensor magnet location in MacBooks, it can also be used to check the magnets in the case to make sure that hits the Hall sensor under the displays glass to sense the closing of the fold over cover. But that only tests the case not the phone has a magnet or not. That only leaves the magnetic Qi charging if the shell case was altered. Here the pattern of the magnets might offer a clue if the case was repacked with a bad knock off.

Bottomline I can't see any benefit using it to test a iPhone unless they suspect the case was changed out. But the iPads don't have Qi charging! At least yet!
