What is causing my MacBook to display vertical pulsating bars?

My screen has started to display multiple vertical bars that pulse and disappear every 5 seconds or so. The screen will freeze during the pulse and then functions normal again until the next pulse.

Seems like a physical issue. Does anyone have any recommendations on what to try before I open the MacBook?

Have you tried plugging in an external display to see if the effect is also present on it?

I'm suspecting the display got damaged somehow, a heavy object pressing on the lids bottom edge or a good bang along the edge.

You'll likely need Display Assembly and here's the guide to put it in Retina MacBook 2015 Display Assembly Replacement
