Does the Stepping of the CPU, i9 9900k matter?

I would like to upgrade my iMac 27 2019. It has an i5 9600k as a CPU.

I want to upgrade to the i9 9900k. Now there is the initial version SRELS with P0 Stepping or newer Version with like SRG13 with R0 Stepping. For the later MS Windows motherboards need a bios update.

Now can I install the newer i9 9900k SRG13? Or will it have problems? I did not find information about any firmware update of the iMac motherboards (which I assume would be required).

Apple doesn't offer any details of which CPU's are compatible within their systems.

The rule of thumb is you are limited to the CPU's Apple supplied in their systems, so for your system Core i5 (8500, 8600, 9600K) Core i9 (9900K) which are part of the Coffee Lake series.

Newer CPU series often have different microcode which is loaded from within the systems ROM. So pushing your system with something newer than Coffee Lake even if the socket and cooling/power needs are met is likely not going to work.
