Why do my function keys not correspond to the legend?

I have a 2010 MacBook Air that works great, except that the keyboard backlight does not work and the function keys are offset by one, for example if I press the pause key it skips back, which is what the button one key to the left should do. Please Help!

I managed to fix it by installing a program called karabiner elements which reset everything.

Apple redid the keys assignments between your series and the newer models

Go into your keyboard settings within Preferences see if the Use F1, F2, etc… option is checked off? I would check on Show keyboard and emoji viewers so you can then have that visible to see if the keys are working correctly.

Let us know what you discover.

The board works and all the keys are received correctly. How do I remap them or fix this problem? I am running high sierra.
