Anyone has any idea about the repairability of the new MacBooks?

I fix laptops for a couple years now and I see repairing gets harder and more limited. Anyone already knows about the new MacBook? i’m highly curious! Thanks in advance.

Our teardown is in progress, but here are some initial observations.

@krisrodriguez - Can’t wait!!

@danj me either! What do you think about the new design style?

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@krisrodriguez - I'm less worried about the design than the functional aspect of the system. I still didn't get everything I was hoping for as I really wanted at least one USB-A port (USB3.1) and Ethernet port.

The one place Apple messed up on is the dam notch! Just looking I see a failure of understanding by Apple on how their gear is used by creatives.

Having a bigger top bezel where the camera sits would have been the smarter design choice than pushing the thin top one with the notch.

So now this finger in the eye sits! Sure Apple can hide it in full screen mode but I don't work in that format as I use menus! Which are now hidden until I pass the pointer to them to expose them. Apple needs to create a display pref option to lower the menu bar below the notch! And set the notch space black.

Yes, I know we lose that screen real-estate but it was a waste anyway's as its not useful for anything but menu bar in this convoluted state.

In the next few days I'll find my way to an Apple Store to see for my self what I've seen on the review sites. At least it's fixable in software!

There is a lot of inconsistencies within the OS and apps being reported so I think Apple needs to get a OS update out putting this issue to bed with the display setting option. Otherwise a perfect system is tarnished with this failure.

And grin and bare it is not the answer as much as many propose "You'll get use to it" "Your brain will un-see it"

Same lines I heard with the butterfly keyboard with its noise and lack of travel, and then its failure.

Apple fix this ASAP!!

@krisrodriguez Thanks and i'm curious about the rest!

In my opinion, the storage and RAM on the new MacBooks will be more expensive to repair. While the battery is now easier to remove on the pro models, the screen will likely be the same as they've been for a few years, any RAM or storage problems will be fixed by replacing the M1 chip, which is probably going to be a more costly repair than just replacing individual components. In addition, I think it will be harder to perform data recovery on these new computers.

It's still a bit early, I've not seen any clear teardowns on the battery yet.

I'm sure the iFixit team will give us a good detailed teardown soon!

From what has been shown in the early reviews there is no way you can upgrade the RAM or storage. The full logic board will need to be replaced if you have any issues with either.
