Replaced MacBook Pro battery, getting erroneous low power boot screen

I recently replaced the battery in my MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) with a battery I purchased from iFixit. This computer model is also known by other names/idenfitiers, all of which are shown at the iFixit link below:

https://www.ifixit.com/Info/ID-your-Mac/...

After installing the new battery, which went off without issue, I followed the recommended calibration procedures set out in the iFixit battery replacement guide. Now, the battery charges and discharges fine, and I'm satisfied with the lifespan of the new battery. However...

I've encountered a significant problem since replacing the battery. If I shut down the computer, or allow it to sleep by shutting the lid for a while, upon turning it back on I get a low power indication (see photo below):

I find the only remedy when this happens is to plug the computer into its AC adapter, at which point it'll turn on just fine. Every time I've done this, though, I discover the computer still has ample battery charge left when it turns on. I'm not talking 5 or 10%, it's always been 50%+.

I'm so confused as to why this is happening. Why will the computer run on battery power just fine, but needs a "jumpstart" from the AC adapter to get going?

I've tried resetting PRAM and SMC, and the issue has not resolved itself.

Any suggestions you may have are much appreciated. Thank you!

Let’s get a better view of things, install this gem of an app! CoconutBattery take a snapshot of the apps main window and post it here for us to see Adding images to an existing question

This series came in two versions the Intergraded graphics (IG) and the Discreet Graphics (DG)

Basically, its the same just a different logic board which either has the Intel graphic services (IG) or got the AMD Radeon GPU added (DG)

Thanks for replying, Dan! I've added screenshots of CoconutBattery as an edit to the original post. I included the "Mac info" and "Battery info" sub-screens as well to provide additional information.

Also included is a screenshot of the "Graphics/Displays" page from System Information. This machine has the AMD Radeon R9 M370X discrete GPU.

Immediately jumping out at me from the CoconutBattery screenshots are:

1. Reported manufacture date of the replacement battery. Could it really be that old? That's older than the manufacture date of the machine itself.

2. I've seen the "Discharging with" number jumping around while I've been in and out of CoconutBattery. You can even see it vary a little from screenshot to screenshot (all taken within 60 seconds of each other). But while writing this post I've gone back and seen it over 20 Watts. How is that possible?

Very excited to hear what you interpret from this information. I so greatly appreciate your time.

Let's get one more CoconutBattery capture!

This one with the MagSafe plugged in. You'll need to have the battery in need of a charge like your captures show and you do need to give it a bit of time so the system goes into charge mode (wait 4~5 minutes)

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

Added! I omitted a second capture of the "Mac info" sub-screen this time since nothing on that appears to change with or without the AC adapter plugged in.

bmoran you have had nothing like this happening with your old battery? You replaced it exactly why? This "Reported manufacture date of the replacement battery." warrants a bit more investigation into the battery as being the culprit. It may not be what it is supposed to be. Have you considered replacing the battery once more to see if that will resolve the issue?

@bmoran - I don’t see anything here with the battery other than the charge level is low which just means you need to live it plugged in a bit longer. Are you sure you had at least 1/3 of the battery charged when you noted the system going to sleep?

Are you using the original SSD that came with the system or did you upgrade it? If you did what did you put in (make and model)

Yes, I’m positive. This erroneous behavior of the system happens nearly 100% of the time I open my laptop after it being shut down/asleep for a while. In every one of these cases the battery has been over 50% charged. I am definitely aware the low battery indication screen is expected when the battery is actually low. Sadly that’s not the case in my situation.

Everything in the system is original apart from the battery. No modifications have been made.

Did you notice my comments (repost below). These seem rather unusual to me:

1. Reported manufacture date of the replacement battery. Could it really be that old? That's older than the manufacture date of the machine itself.

2. I've seen the "Discharging with" number jumping around while I've been in and out of CoconutBattery. crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@bmoran - At this point I think you need to find a local shop to help you as the only thing I can think of is corrosion within the SMC logic area.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

That seems implausible considering I had no symptoms like this with the original battery. I think I’ll reach out to iFixit and seek another battery prior to bringing it in and paying someone to investigate. I have a substantial amount of experience in hardware I.T. support so I’m confident in my abilities and rest assured that these symptoms aren’t related to an error during the battery replacement process, either.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

@bmoran - Then get another battery, but your symptoms point to an SMC issue which is within the main logic board. And your battery micro-controller is working and reporting the correct temp and voltage values.
