Not booting unless plugged in. But...

My MacBook Pro won’t boot unless plugged in, when I do plug it in I don’t have to even press the power button for it to turn on. However after removing the charger it will turn off after 1 minute usually. It is showing that it’s charging, it’s currently at 80%.

There’s also an issue with the screen, there’s a thick line that is high contrast, and when it gets hot it goes to a lower contrast.

I’ve tried Resetting SMC and NVRAM neither helped.

There was a recent spill, however it was cleaned up deeply internally and there wasn’t a boot issue until I put it back together. The screen issue was there immediately after the spill but a lot worse, I could even read anything as it was a fully broken up image.

When I check the cause of shutdown they are all okay except for when I unplug, it says -14 which I’ve read is a power surge. Any ideas would be really appreciated.

Thanks :)

Sadly you need a new battery! The number of cycles has exceeded its 1,000 cycles the battery is rated too Determine battery cycle count for Mac notebooks.

Given the systems age you are a heavy remote user. You tend to let the battery run to empty and then charge it. Each time to let the system get past the 2/3 point your battery needs to work harder to charge it and burns a cycle. The number of cycles wear the battery.

@danj I was thinking that, however, the battery was just fine before. The chance that the issues are connected is slim. The problems happened on the same day.

I will look into getting a new battery, I was already aware that the cycle count was too high.

@creedd - I'm sure what ever was spilled didn't do you any favors. Maybe its time to backup your system and get a new system.
