cannot install macOS 10.13/later because of missing firmware partition

Hi guys,

I recently purchased a Mid 2012 13” as a computer in my other office. It came with a formatted hard drive, so I created a bootable installer of 10.12 Sierra. It completed successfully, but most of my apps didn’t work because of the obsolescence of 10.12. I know this computer can run 10.14/10.15 so I tried to install 10.14 (Mojave) but i got a message saying “you may not install to this volume because your computer is missing a firmware partition.” I tried to convert the drive to APFS because that fixed the issue in my 2015 pro. But then I got different message

(screenshot from 2009 MBP on 10.14 but exact same message on the 2012) So I restarted, reset the PRAM and tried a different disk but no luck. I found the newest EFI update (2.9) and tried to install the PKG and it gave me an alert that it cannot be installed on my computer. Any answers?

Try working up the releases. Sierra to High Sierra, then Mojave.

If that fails you’ll need to backup your drive (if you have anything on it thats important) create a bootable Mojave OS installer thumb drive. Using it to boot up under delete all of the partitions and format the drive with GUID with a journaled file system (the OS installer will upgrade it to APFS).

yup, that fixed it right up. Also you could install Catalina by dosdude's tool and not installing any post install patches

@rs1020 -- Why do you want to go with Catalina? Your systems hardware won't offer any benefit. In fact if you are using older 32bit apps they won't work under it. Apple is still maintaining sercurity updates for Mojave for a few more years.

yeah Catalina stinks, my apps all don't work now ;) downgrading to 10.14 was easy tho
