I never liked the Apple method of glueing batteries in as the surfaces need to be spotless and free of any junk as well as oils. Then you have the issue of the uppercase frame being slightly warped from a blistered battery so it can be difficult to get the new battery to stick down. Basically a bad design choice!
Now you’ll need to start off cleaning the upper case area using GoofOff to remove all traces of the old adhesive. Then as is an oil you need to now remove the traces of it as well using reagent quality isopropyl alcohol 85% or better. Rubbing or cheap isopropyl alcohol has other stuff in it which can mess you up! Use paper towels to blot off the wet a few times so you are sure nothing is left.
OK, last step! Now you’ll need to repeat to get the old tape from the battery off using the same method and then get some wide 3M double stick sheets to replace the ones you have.
Whats important is not getting anything thick as the space is very limited. And you don’t want to touch the surfaces with your fingers.
