MacBook has no backlight and only turns on when plugged in

My MacBook was working perfectly and I went to turn it on the next day and now it has no backlight and will only power on if plugged into the charger. Could it be as simple as a battery replacement? I of course can not check the battery health as I have no backlight.

You can use a flashlight shining into the logo (poor mans backlight) or use an external display via a Thunderbolt or mDP adapter to HDMI or VGA.
