A1708/EMC 3164 — Released June 2017, this entry-level MacBook Pro retains its traditional function keys (as opposed to the OLED Touch Bar).

FaceTime camera not detected

Hello Everyone,

I work as a computer technician for a local repair shop. I recently ran into a odd issue with no camera detected.

Customer came in with a broken screen on a MacBook Pro A1708 with macOS Mojave. I thought it would be a routine LCD replacement job so I ordered from our usual reliable vendor swapped the screen it turned out fine until I tried photo booth and got "no camera detected” so ran all the usual command's for camera issues, checked the OS drivers (applecamera.plugin) nothing missing there I tried booting with external drive loaded with Catalina still no camera detected so tried another screen from a working MacBook Pro with the camera working and still no camera detected on either macOS Mojave or Catalina. I then tried the replacement screenI ordered on the working laptop and the camera worked on it so I thought logic board, nope! I purchased another board and still no camera.

I'm lost on this one?

I’m suspecting you reused the MacBook Pro 13" Retina (A1708, A2159) Display Cable with all of your change outs. I bet you one or two pins are damaged!

Thank you for replying Dan

The logic board came with the display cable but I will swap it out to rule that out. I did try a used screen on the purchased logic board and the camera worked on it. I won't be back into work until Saturday I will update then. Thanks again

@zap computers - Any news?

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

Ended up ordering another logic board hoping the one I got was defective still waiting on it should have it by this week. I tried swapping the video cable had no luck. I tried another working screen No Camera Detected. I've gotten 4 other MacBook Pros in the shop all A1708 late and mid-2017 No coincidence they all have screen issues No Back light on 1 and no video on the other 3 replacing the screens solved the problem. Seems like they should have extended the 13-inch MacBook Pro Display Backlight Service Program to the 2017 models as well.

Hi Zap computers, do you know what is the reason for “no camera” after replacing the screen assembly?
