New hard drive, trying to load OS... screen goes black

So I put a new hard drive in my MacBook and when I went to load the OS, the screen is mostly white but looks like it has lines of green and red in it… the Apple symbol shows and the load bar, but shortly after… the screen goes black and the computers fan just runs harder… any suggestions?

Ouch! Your dedicated GPU has failed. This is a common failure in this series.

You’ll need to decide which direction makes sense for you:

  • Replacing the logic board you can stick with a 2011 board which could also fail, if you push the system to hard. Or, you can upgrade to a 2012 board which has a better dedicated GPU.
  • Disable the now bad GPU and just don’t do any heavy graphics.

In fact I’m working on a 2011 system which I upgraded the logic board to a 2012 after getting my system serviced by Apple under the extended warranty program they offered three times and replacing the logic board my self as well only to have it fail soon afterwards before going to a 2012 board.

The last option is just go with a newer retina model (hopefully used).
