Printer stops partway through printing. Indicates a paper jam.

Hi all,

Perhaps someone here has had the same problem with this model or family of printers and has found a solution.

I’ve cleaned all the rollers that I can find:

1) Pickup rollers in the paper drawer,

2) Under the drum/cartridge,

3) At the back of the printer through the tilting cover,

4) At the final output.

I followed Brother’s advice and used alcohol first but then bought a rubber renew product by MG Chemicals called “Rubber Renue”. The latter took made the rollers fresh-looking again. Be careful that you don’t get it on the plastic parts as it seems to melt them a little. :^)

It still didn’t work so I called Brother and they had me go through some steps to see where in the paper path the problem was happening. To do so, they asked me to open the back door, feed paper into the single sheet feeder, and then press the following key combination to get into a maintenance mode:

Please read the following instructions carefully in order to access the  MAINTENANCE menu of your Brother Printer.

1. Please make sure the screen of the printer is on the home screen. If it is not, please press on the Red [X] to return to the home screen.

2. Press on [FAX] - The [Home] Icon will light up.

3. Press and hold the [Home] Icon until the screen changes to a black screen with four rectangles. It will first go back to the Home screen, keep holding it and it will change again.

4. Press and hold the bottom rectangle until a Number Pad appears on the screen.5. On the Number Pad, please enter the following 5 code numbers in order, as quickly as possible: [*] – [2] – [8] – [6] – [4].

6. If the code is entered correctly, the screen should display: MAINTENANCE right above the Number Pad.

7. Now press 77 and press Mono Start.

After about 10 seconds it should print out a diagnostic page. Mine jammed, of course.

In the picture below you can see how far the paper travelled until it jammed in my printer…

Any help with this would be greatly appreciated.

My MCF-L2740WD is also doing exactly this. It was fine for 2-3 years and then suddenly started doing this. Every attempt at printing results in this same outcome. The paper ends up in the exactly the same position as that shown in the photo. It does not appear to be jammed and the paper is in near enough perfect condition once it is pulled out. Something appears to be falsely registering a jam, and stopping the printer.

I have tried many things (cleaning, factory reset) but to no avail. Next step seems to be disassembly, but I would rather not.

Just wondering if you ever resolved the issue?

Hi Chris,

Unfortunately, I was unable to determine a solution to this problem. I spent some time on the phone with a technician who ran me through the steps in my first post above. When the paper jammed again, he said that I'll have to buy a new printer. :^) How convenient! They did give me a good discount on a new one and I just ended up buying the MFC-L2750WD, which has been working really well since then. (Fingers crossed.)

I'm with you, though, in that there is some sort of sensor that is stopping the paper from feeding right through. It could be something as simple as a loose belt which is not allowing one of the rollers to spin at its proper speed which is being picked up by a sensor of some sort, most likely optical.

Good luck to you.

Cheers,

Barry

Hi Barry.

Thank you for the update. Sorry you didn't have any success in repairing the 40WD, but glad the 50DW is still going well.

For any that come across this thread in the future. I disassembled as much as I could in the likely problem area which amounted mainly to the removal of the fuser unit. Cleaned as much as possible. After reassembly I retested. I was about to give up when a print went through, no jam. This is not resolved though as it is very random, and only roughly one in six prints are successful i.e. it is still not usable. I found the best way to test was just to print a single blank page, using the manual feed tray to eliminate any possible problem with the pickup from the auto tray.

I know printing is also okay, or at least about a half of the page gets printed before the supposed 'jam' occurs. Although the fuser only gets to 'fuse' about a third of the page which is about right, but it does seem to demonstrate that fusing is fine too.

If I have any further success I will give an update.
