Fresh install OS Lion - Cannot download additionnal contents

Good evening,

I have been stuck for a couple of days and can’t find the solution…

My Macbook Pro 2011’s SSD disk is erased. Internet recovery didn’t work, I got the cannot download additional component error. I tested my internet connection with the Safari help tool: internet works via Ethernet (command + D)

So I created a bootable USB drive via TransMac, with a Lion OS. I got the .app file from a friend owning a Macbook Pro running Lion. I restored on the USB stick the file InstallESD.dmg (3,664 Ko). I only have access to a PC to create the stick…

After several trials, I can now see the usb when pressing Option during the Mac start. But when I select it, and launch the install of the OS, the process is still looking for additionnal components, and therefore stops exactly like it did before with the internet recovery. Same error message… As suggested in another post of the forum, I changed the date of the system (via terminal) to somewhere in 2012. When trying the usb install, i ve shut down all internet connections. Why is the system looking for files on the internet though it is launched via usb? This did not change anything…

Additional info, collected on the internet:

  • i also removed my hdd (replacing the optical reader) to make sure it does not interfere
  • i also removed one ram stick to have only 2 gb of ram

Any tips to help me solve this problem?

Thanks in advance for your help

Your hitting an Apple imposted brick wall! Apple puts an expiration date within its OS installers (certificate). Here’s a bit more on it If you've got an old macOS install image, it will probably stop working today

Apple did fix their blonder on the newest versions as they expired prematurely, reissuing Mojave back to El Capitan. Sadly Lion and Mountain Lion did not get updated. While we can get around that using a different approach I think you’ve making this harder than it needs to be. Is there a strong reason why you are going this far back?

If you didn’t altered your drive and only noted your system stopped working (you got the blinking question mark in a folder) Then you have in fact a hardware issues not software!

OK, let me explain… The Unibody MacBook Pro’s often need a new HD SATA cable and more so when you upgrade a HDD to a SSD. Here’s a bit more on the details Your Hard Drive Cable Is A Ticking Time Bomb I think the title says it all!

So here’s the needed part MacBook Pro 13" Unibody (Mid 2012) Hard Drive Cable And yes this is a 2012 version of the cable which is the better one. And here’s the guide to put it in MacBook Pro 13" Unibody Late 2011 Hard Drive Cable Replacement

Even still we need to address two things besides replacing the cable, as you read in the link above we need to place a strip of electricians tape on the uppercase where the cable crosses over so you protect it from abrasion from the rough aluminum. The second is not damaging the cable in the process of installing it. Don’t crease it! That damages the thin foil wires within the cable. Instead find an old BIC ballpoint pen to get the ink straw out, we’ll use it as a forming brake. Using it to create the clean arcs where the cable needs to bend around the corners, its radius is as tight as you want the cable to bend.

While I’ve gone over the hardware side of things you still likely have corruptions on the drive. Hopefully you still have a bootable drive. If not, you’ll need to install a fresh OS. There are a few different ways to do this. The first is to leverage internet recovery which if your system has the newer firmware should be able to gain access to it. With your drive installed restart your system and hold the Option, Command (⌘) and R keys to enter into Internet Recovery making sure you have internet access via WiFi or better via Ethernet.

If you can’t get there, see if you have a recovery partition setup following ‘How to reinstall macOS from macOS Recovery’

The next option is to create using a second Mac a bootable OS installer USB Thumb drive following this guide: How to create a bootable macOS Sierra installer drive using the OS installed from here: How to upgrade to macOS Sierra, jump down to Step 4 for the URL link.

I strongly recommend you stick with Sierra on your system and you need the file I linked here as Apple messed up the certificates on the older versions which brings us back to the top issue!

Let us know how it goes!

Good Luck!

Thank you for this detailled answer.

It seems the cable issue is the right one: using my bootable USB stick, I managed to install the Lion OS on my SSD connected via USB (separate casing). Meaning: my bootable USB stick is good and the SSD itself is not corrupted.

So I will order the cable as suggested and let you know if it definitely solve the problem. I find it quit unfortunate the Apple is giving so poor error message! Cannot download addionnal packages leads to a disk cable failure! I should have post here before erasing my entire SSD disk…

Additionnal question: you suggest to install Sierra instead of Lion? Will the Mac handle it without slowing down? Can the internet recovery allow me to install it via Apple server and for free?

Thanks a lot!

Once you get to Lion, get a second USB thumb drive format it GUID with journaled file system. Download the installer via the link above, then copy over the installer to the USB drive and run the tool to convert it to a bootable installer as explained in the guide above. Now restart your system using it to install Sierra. Install the OS to your internal drive.

I would upgrade as Apple has long since stopped issuing security updates for Lion so your system is very exposed! As far as performance its better! Apple did a lot of tweaking making Sierra the best OS in my mind before messing it all up with APFS.

Ok I received the cable (2012) as suggested. It works perfectly! Thank you very much Dan. Last thing remaining is to install Sierra, it should be ok!
