MacBook Pro 15 late 2016 no backlight

Hey guys,

the backlight on my laptop doesnt work. I tried pram and sms reset but nothing worked. When i put a flashlight on the display i see that he booted up and i can also plug in a external display and it works. Any ideas for what i can do? I read that maybe somethings wrong with the connectors on the logic board. The laptop was never wet and never falled down.

Sadly, your backlight ribbon cable has failed. This is a cable that runs between the system logic board to your display

This is a common issue on both the 13” & 15” 2016 & 17 models. Most people know it as FlexGate 2018 MacBook Pros Try to Solve Flexgate Without Admitting It Exists. Apple did create a extended warranty program for the 13” models 13-inch MacBook Pro Display Backlight Service Program. You’ll need to plead your case at an Apple Store to get a warranty exception which some people have managed to get for the 15” models. You’ll likely need to work up the food chain within Apple from the Genius, service manager, store manager(s) and then to the regional manager(s).

Your other option is to just get a new display assembly. Here’s the guide: MacBook Pro 15" Touch Bar Late 2016 Screen Replacement

If you know of a very good micro soldiering tech the damaged cable can be replaced its not easy! Here’s the cable https://www.ifixit.com/Store/Mac/MacBook.... I failed on my first attempt!

I would just walk in Vs calling. I often find the telephone support folks tend blame you instead of being helpful getting you an appointment which is all they should do here.

Do you know if they will replace the display with the newer one from 2018? Or will i get the same 2016 Display which can cause the same problems one year later?

You'll need to ask Apple that!

What I can tell you is Apple rev'ed the part to 661-08030 from 661-06375 for the Space Grey part and to 661-08031 to 661-06376 for the Silver so clearly something changed!

I also have a 2016 15" MacBook Pro with this problem, however, the lid has been closed less than 10 times in it's lifetime so I don't think it is related to FlexGate. Could this be caused by anything other that the $750 fix?

The angle of the lid plays into this so it still could be! The only way is to have someone with the deeper skills inspect the cable for damage
