Upgrade ssd and keep my current system and files

Hello, I would like to upgrade my 128gb SSD to a new one (512gb), however I want to keep ALL my current system and files, how can I do it? I’ve done a back up of my current ssd to a hard drive on time machine, does that work to clone this drive to a new one?

Don’t use cloning software! Use the processes Apple recommends.

To clarify:

  • Use TimeMachine to make your backup on the external drive. Or, use a external case to hold your blade SSD to restore from.
  • Install your new SSD
  • Startup your system either with an external bootable drive which has a copy of the OS installer you need. Or, launch Internet recovery (Restart system and press Command (⌘) and R keys).
  • Format the drive to GUID partition mapping using Disk Utility
  • Install the OS
  • At the end of the install process you will be asked if you have anything to recover. This is where you plug in your backup drive or your original drive to then use Migration Assistant to copy off your user accounts, apps & data. Note: the guide assumes you have a new system Vs upgrading your drive the process is the same! Just point to your TimeMachine or your connected original drive.

A full time machine backup is sufficient.

You can then restore from time machine in OS X recovery.
