What is the normal charging voltage for the USB-C port?

I’m using a USB Type C PowerMeter tester from Jokitech to test the voltage passing through the charging port on a MacBook (Retina, 12-inch, Early 2016) that’s not charging or powering on. The reading I get is 5.13V / 0.00A.

USB-C offers a few different voltages depending on what the device asks for. If you are using the original Apple charger you’ll see on the unit the following:

  • Apple 30W USB-C Power Adapter: 5V @ 3A, 9V @ 3A, 15V @ 2A, 20V @ 1.5A
  • Apple 29W USB-C Power Adapter: 5.2V @ 2.4A, 14.5V @ 2A

So your charger is working, the system appears not to be asking for power (no current draw).

  • Is the battery charged?
  • Is the cable you are using the original one that came with the system?
