Why does my phone go crazy with ear buds plugged in?

Lately when I have my ear buds plugged into my phone it starts randomly doing different functions. If it turns a certain way it will randomly start playing Spotify despite the app not even being open. If I'm on YouTube it'll randomly pause and play the video. Multiple times it'll pop up with the menu asking me what app I'd like to use to perform this function when I hadn't been trying to do anything. It only does this when the ear buds are in.

If its of any importance I have two small cracks on the side of my screen but that happened months ago before this problem occurred.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

I had the same problem with spotify and YouTube. I fixed spotify by uninstalling and reinstalling it but YouTube is still weird and now my phone keeps digging and telling me the time and the volume keeps getting turned up.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

Just fixed on Galaxy s10+

Search in settings "headphones" select "Google Assistant - devices" then select "wired headphones" and turn off "Get help from google"

Hope this helps.

Hi @popcornscavenge ,

Your phone may be suffering from ghost touching.

This could be related to the two small cracks in the screen which initially may not have been a problem but it may have gotten progressively worse.

Try starting the phone in safe mode to eliminate the remote possibility that it is a downloaded app that is the cause of the problem.

If it doesn’t occur when using the phone in safe mode, then a downloaded app is the cause of the problem. The trick is to find out which one.

The more likely problem is that it is a faulty touchscreen (digitizer). It cannot be repaired, it has to be replaced.

Thank you I'll give this a look! Luckily if I need to replace it its under warranty still :)

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

I don't know about this, I don't have any cracks. And a bit of my earphones at the top where you put the thing in came off. Well I mean just a plastic bit which keeps it stable, but when I put it back to where its supposed to be, it doesn't glitch. Plus my Google keeps saying stuff

like "it's currently 20:13"

"sorry I can't show you your updates at the moment" and my YouTube keeps pausing

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

I use a samsung tablet and have disabled gestures and movements, plus a host of other stuff

I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab A... same problem, disabled lots of stuff but problem returned. Thought it might have been the protective cover I have it in, wasn't that either. I placed a piece of white paper over the front camera aperture and this has stopped the clock from responding, although there was one occasion when it happened again. It only happened once in the last few days. I think if some light gets through the paper then it might get triggered. The events were always triggered when I made a sudden movement, usually when sitting in dim lighting conditions. Sometimes also the volume control would appear as well.

crwdns2934271:0crwdnd2934271:0crwdne2934271:0

Continued

Try placing a dark piece of paper over the front camera.  My first attempts were to cover the front camera, mic and light sensor. The problem might be attributed to a recent update since I have had the tablet for more than a year and use it regularly (daily) for youtube and education. It has only been recently that the problem started. My searches now show that this problem is not just limited to the Samsung Galaxy but to other mobile devices too!! It seems to be linked in with Google assistant even though I disabled / turned off anything that might have been relevant.

@popcornscavenge warranty is void because of the screen damage, unless you mean insurance.

Actually I think the headphone jack is either corroded / liquid damaged, very dirty contacts or worn out inside. This would cause the phone to think the play button is being pressed on the earphones intermittently.

I would recommend cleaning the headphone jack. I do these by using isopropyl alcohol and a cotton swab with some of the cotton removed to let it fit in the headphone jack and spin it a few times to clean. I start off with tweezers first carefully if there is dust.

I have experiencing the same problem. I listen to music when I run and this was super distracting and frustrating. I googled the issue and found this, thank goodness. I'm so grateful, this trick seemed to have worked.

I'm pretty sure the problem lies in the headphone jack. I've had the same thing occur to me the past few weeks, whenever i plug in the headphones or earbuds my phone goes crazy, pressing random things and doing random functions. But I've noticed that it only does that with wired headphones, i have Bluetooth connectable ones and whenever i connect none of that happens. So my advice would be to check for any dirt in the headphone jack itself and clean it out with a cotton swab and if that doesn't help then possibly suggest buying wireless headphones or earbuds or bring the phone to a professional who can take a closer look at it.

I had same issue. for me the issue was one of the wires on my earbuds (the one that had a mic and control buttons) was cracked and fraying . I figured that it was shorting out sending false control signals to the phone.

I know this could cause more problems, but they were cheap, very thin gauge wires soo I just clipped that whole line off and tested it - issue resolved.

To keep it fixed till I could get a new set of buds I made sure to separate the wires a bit more and insulate each with elec. tape.

YEP this was the problem on mine too got j lab ear buds with a mic on one line didnt know what that was till earlier when i kept pressing the button on it and every time i press it the same problem happens on my screen the volume thing pops up blocking what im doing and the voice keeps coming on telling me the time and saying sorry couldnt understand what you said. So figured it had something to do with a mic on the ear buds. Plus i can hear static like the ear buds are going bad. And the problem getting worse like something was going bad on my earbuds. None of the other answers made sense for me until i got to yours. Just taped the spot i figured is worn out until I get some new ones. Been working lil better so far

I had the problem of my phone going crazy with wire ear buds. I simply blew into the internal jack a couple of times and it seems to have rectified the problem.

I found this post when I was Googling my problem. When I plug in wired ear buds on my Samsung smartphone, the volume goes all the way down by itself. No cracks in the screen though. Sometimes it happens over and over several.times then stops for a few minutes then does it once, waits a few minutes then does it again then back to over and over again.

I have a Samsung, and I have a headphone jack for my phone and just a pair of wired earbuds, this problem doesn't seem to occur when I don't have headphones in, but when I do my Google voice turns on at random times, very frequently, and my songs start skipping about every 3 seconds into every song

I am pretty certain it has to do with a microphone being present and Google is listening. I have the same problem and believe it had stopped now since removing all access to the microphone. I used to get pop ups and messages just as soon as I plugged in my wired earbuds. I tried muffling the mic but that wasn't enough. I ended up basically disabling use of the microphone for everything. If it happens again on any new device, I will try removing the microphone from the headphone cable.

I had same issue with new wire earbuds on my new mobile phone. When I connected the earbuds, the icon of headphones with a microphone would appear in the upper right corner. Then the cell phone would go crazy. I pulled the jack out a few millimeters and the icon in the upper right corner changed to regular headphones. And the mobile phone worked normally.
