You currently have the middle level machine, the RAM is maxed out ar 16GB
Apple iMac "Core i3" 3.2 21.5-Inch (Mid-2010) Specs
Identifiers: Mid-2010 - MC509LL/A - iMac11,2 - A1311 - 2389
Maximum MacOS:X 10.13.x*

Taking it to the "Core i5" 3.6 will only give you a 15% increase in benchmark.
Your best best will be going to an SSD drive. You have a
Serial ATA (3 Gb/s) bus so you will need a drive that is backward compatible.
You will also need the OWC thermal sensor to prevent run away fan issues. Here are your options:

"Worth" is subjective; what might be worthwhile for you may not be worthwhile for someone else.
In the realm of internal upgrades, if your iMac has a Core 2 Duo or Core i3 processor you can max it out to 16GB. If it has a Core i5 or i7, you can go up to 32GB.
For your hard drive, you can either install a larger capacity and/or faster hard drive, or if you really want a nice boost you can install an SSD.
If you can live without an optical drive, you can also replace it with a second internal drive (either SSD or HD).
Alternately, you can replace your optical drive with an internal blu-ray drive.
