"Worth" is subjective; what might be worthwhile for you may not be worthwhile for someone else.

In the realm of internal upgrades, if your iMac has a Core 2 Duo or Core i3 processor you can max it out to 16GB. If it has a Core i5 or i7, you can go up to 32GB.

For your hard drive, you can either install a larger capacity and/or faster hard drive, or if you really want a nice boost you can install an SSD.

If you can live without an optical drive, you can also replace it with a second internal drive (either SSD or HD).

Alternately, you can replace your optical drive with an internal blu-ray drive.

Taking it to the "Core i5" 3.6  will only give you a 15% increase in benchmark.

Your best best will be going to an SSD drive. You have a

Serial ATA (3 Gb/s) bus so you will need a drive that is backward compatible.
