Can I swap an internal xbox one hardrive into another xbox

i have an xbox one s thats been dropped, it greened screened for 2 hours then went to an error code screen after i turned it on again, it wouldn’t allow me to do a system offline update, it would freeze on applying update, it wouldnt allow me to factory reset the console either.. so i opened my old broken original xbox one console and took the WD 500 gig internal hardrive out of it and put it into my xbox one s. i downloaded the newest system update (offline) put it on a formatted usb and this time it worked, it updated perfectly, with my old xbox one hardrive inside “i only can assume that the old xbox s hardrive is corrupted” how ever a week later it fell on the ground again and started doing the same thing, so i brought a broken xbox one from a second hand dealer, it starts up and you can sign in but sometimes it overheats and turns off “according to the retailer” but from what i could see, it worked perfectly fine, i opened it up, it’s a samsung segate 1000tb hardrive, i put it into my xbox one s and i keep getting error codes 100, 101, 106, it won’t allow me to do a offline system update or a factory reset again, then i put it back into the orignal xbox one that i brought and it green screen froze.. i know the hardrive works, its not corrupted, it allows me to do an offline system update on the original xbox one but it freezes on applying at 58% please help, im not sure whats happening

I’m actually amazed that these drives work hot-swappable from one Xbox to another. You might want to check the health of all these hard drives by plugging the 2.5” laptop sized drives into a portable hard drive enclosure or a desktop computer then using a software called Hard Disk Sentinel for the HDD health. Usually they report bad or weak sectors to indicate physical damage on these drives.

I didn't even know a 1000tb drive existed! Anyway, one nice thing about the xb1 console is that the hdd isn't locked or married the the motherboard anymore which means you can swap drives in and out as you please but they must be formatted in NTFS. If your xb1s hdd works then you can clone it using parted magic or another patrition program. Parted magic was the only one I could get to clone my 500gb to 2tb and it's pretty straight forward. What you'll need to do first is format that big ass drive of yours in ntfs, connect both drives to your pc and within parted magic clone the drive. You'll have to make some minor tweaks to the unformatted space to access it otherwise you'll have a lot of unaccessable disk space. I was very much a noob when I figured it all out so even those with limited experience can accomplish this. Just remember to clone the right drives otherwise it'll wipe all your saved data!!!

Hey! It sounds like its now a hard drive problem. Since hard drives are mechanical unlike a SSD you could have broken in the internals of the hard drive from the drops. Seems like you might need to buy a new hard drive to replace it. Hope this helps!

OK so I have a question, I have an Xbox one s with a busted HDMI out port and I want to just take the hard drive in it and place it in a new xbox one s. is this possible without any problems?

@matt_s im sure you have figured it out by now but here’s to the chance that you didn’t and the other odd chance you still have all of that hardware around. But to answer your question, yes that is possible. Bonus the Xbox one x/s series are super easy to tear down and put back together

So you don't have to format or use a p.c I can just swap the hard drives and keep gaming? I'm having the same exact issue and I have a 500gb xbox coming today. Can I put my broken xbox 1tb in the 500gb and it'll work without any issiues?
