Model A1419 / EMC 3070 / Mid 2017 / 3.4, 3.5 or 3.8 GHz Core i5 or 4.2 GHz Core i7 Kaby Lake Processor (ID iMac18,3) / Retina 5K display. Refer to the older iMac Intel 27" Retina 5K Display (Late 2014 & 2015) guides as the system is very similar.

New iMac (2019) based on same architecture as 2017?

It looks like the new iMac 2019 is just a refresh of processors vs. a redesign. Does anyone know if this is the case? Specifically, I’m curious whether the RAM will remain user upgradeable through a door in the back of the computer.

Boy! You didn’t even wait for the ink to dry on the announcement!

Start your stopwatch …

No-one even has the systems yet as well as had the time to even take a peek inside on whats changed (if anything). It will likely be a good month before we’ll have any clues.

As for the RAM access looking at the gallery we can see the door release button is still present just above the power outlet. So unless someone goofed on the pictures it appears the RAM is still accessible from the back.

Can you give me a link to the announcement? I must be out of the loop.

Thanks, I can't believe I missed this, I saw something on Reddit about it, but wasn't really paying attention.

@reedcrosby - From what I've read nothing else has changed other than the CPU & GPU updates. While this is a good start Apple needs to get moving on getting TouchID and/or FaceID added to the iMac's.

I'm still waiting for the REAL Pro's MacBook Pro's to come out. The rumor has it a 16" or 16.5" is coming out later this year. I hope Apple aims this for us pro's. Giving us back the older keyboard, smaller touchpad & give us back the ports!

I believe the 2017 models were based on Kaby Lake. I don’t think there’s a definitive answer, but it’s likely the 2019 iMac will use Ice Lake, if Intel ever gets around to using 10nm as they promised. The RAM is something we’re hoping for, but likely won’t happen, as the iMac Pro did not feature user-servicable memory.

Edit: @danj has the better answer here.

I belive the CPU socket changed at least, as the 2017 is not compatible with i8 and i9

It does not means that new model has all hardware and configuration are changed. iMac 2019 has latest operating system Mojave and also more RAM and more powerful processor.

Normally all PC Manufacture release new model after few changes to older model. same for iMac 2019

Been researching few bits and bobs.

Quick conclusion: 27" 2019 iMac is a 'Copy/Paste' of 27" 2017 one. No issues with design whatsoever.

Quick spec comparison of 27" 2017 vs 2019 on pic below:

Everything is pretty much.. same.. surprisingly.. 😎 2 years difference?

CPU:

Would be highly "surprised" if anyone ever put GEN 9 CPU in 2017 iMac and it would work. Both CPU GENs are on same socket.

Sockets Supported: FCLGA1151

Detailed comparison from Intel

Summary (ONLY significant differences):

1) GEN9 vs GEN7 - Larger cache (9MB over 6MB),

2) GEN9 vs GEN7 - MAX Ram support (128GB over 64GB)

GPU:

If you can get your hands on 27" 2017 with 8GB VRAM for a good bargain price instead of 2019 - Grab it hands down honest recommendation. Explaining why below.

Essentially the difference is "X".. now then.. 😏🤡

Topic from MacRoumors forum.

The recent Geekbench 5 OpenCL results in this thread (https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/gee...) show the 580X scoring approximately 37,000 and the 580 scoring approximately 32,000. So according to these results at least the 580X is about 15% faster. But I don't know how much that reflects real world results.

SSD

Something thought sharing while got hands on 2 27" machines 2017 & 2019. Thought that maybe at least.. 2019 would have a faster PCIE NVMe support for SSD upgrade .. but.. no.. even that is on 2017 "level".

Limit is set: 8.0 GT/s (gigatransfers per second) is the data transfer rate for PCIe Gen3, which is a type of PCIe M.2 SSD

Over the years only had problem ONCE with a WD SSD on 2014 MBP with Sleep states. All the rest of SSDs work just fine, possibly WD as well on those iMacs. Don't be "flagged" away by notes around Sintech SSD recomendation: only Samsung/Crucial e.t.c. Other are compatible on SAME level accordingly. PCIE Gen3 is "what is says on the tin" for ALL - no magic! 🙄🤭

However beyond speed there are other tech specs, which matter between GEN3 & GEN4 PCIE SSDs:

DRAM Cache, NAND type, Controller

Reliability,

Performance etc.

So picking a good GEN4 SSD for a good price tag is not "overspending".

Verdict & macOS:

Final words for those with.. Buts! Or lazy butts : ) ✌️

Don't let yourself be a Apple's victim - chasing this "LAST/BEST" supported tech. Always balance out what matters and value for money. Achieve extra security with Encyption. That's beyond standard "default" already on its own.
