Epson XP-830 - paper not feeding completely through ADF

Has anyone else seen a problem with paper not feeding completely through the ADF on an Epson XP-830? The paper only gets three-quarters of the way through. I’ve inspected and cleaned the ADF but the the problem persists.

This is usually caused by a failing ADF motor or worn out pickup rollers. Depending on how much you use the ADF mainly determines which problem is more likely, since some of these printers are a few years old.

  • If you use the ADF a lot, it’s likely a worn out roller. There isn’t much you can do about this since the rollers (generally) aren’t designed to be replaced on inkjet printers. Some lasers allow it, but the only way to get the rollers is from a company cloning the factory part unless it’s an FCC Class A model, generally.
  • If it’s gently used, the motor is probably bad. Again, similar situation - you’re kind of screwed if you think you can replace the motor(s).

While the printer is likely a total loss in terms of the ADF, it may be caused by something simple like paper in the track that can be accessed easily. If you see this or dust on the rollers it doesn’t hurt to clean the rollers and see if it works. If it doesn’t work I would just forget about the ADF ever working again and use it as if it’s a flatbed scanner.

Thanks for the quick response, Nick. I was afraid of that. It's disappointing for such an expensive printer. It's also disappointing that Epson doesn't appear to have a decent support network in the UK.

None of the printer manufacturers have good support networks for consumer models. They know you'll just throw it out and I'll have to give you that information about service so they just don't care.

Maybe a bit late. However I experienced a similar issue. It was drawing the paper up to half and then got stuck. It turned out that on the white mat on the scanner with the grey frame (below the ADF and just above the flatbed scanner, it can be easily removed) the transparent plastic was below the white mat and it needs to be above (when the scanner is closed). Just put it above.
