@countrylogic

Since the motor is the same as for the DeWalt DW959 it most likely uses a brush box. Take a look on here for that. post some more pictiures of your motor etc. when you get to the disassembly, that way we can see what you see. Use this guide Adding images to an existing question for that. DeWalt DC970 Motor Replacement

I have the DW959, it has a sealed motor and you cannot replace the brushes. The motor part number is 615321-02SV. Most sites no longer sell it, it goes for about $60.

I was able to obtain the motor for far less than the cost of a full replacement.

Can confirm. I have a DC970 with original NiCd batteries and I have had it apart. I didn't see a clean path to the brushes.

DeWalts have a cover or dedicated part on the side for modular brush drills.

I just wanted to update my post, I found parts diagrams for the DW959 that show the brushes, however when I took my drill apart you cannot see the brushes and there is no spade connector to disconnect them. That end of the motor is entirely sealed. You may be able to disassemble the motor from the other end and remove the armature but that leaves the brushes 2 inches down in the motor casing. It doesn't look fixable to me.

I have a DW970 can't find brushes to purchase for my drill.
