Sony had a bad batch of CCDs many years ago that affected a number of Nikon cameras, incidentally, given that Nikon has used Sony sensors for many years. The black image issue on a lot of older cameras like this is a near universal sign of this failure. The only way to fix it is a replacement sensor, which is NLA from Sony and Nikon, and at this stage, Nikon is no longer repairing them due to the age and parts status.
It might be possible to purchase a lens assembly and attempt to calibrate the new sensor, but many Sony sensors have a problem with a high enough failure rate that a significant number of used sensors fail in the same way, unfortunately. At this point, I would consider a modern Canon or Sony camera, which is not prone to failing due to horrible defects killing sensors.
