You'll need to see if you can recover them using a recovery program like Data Rescue 5 for Mac.

I looked at the reviews of this package. It is licensed for only one computer. I have three that I may use it on. Also, it does not allow pause and restart feature, which i s useful because deep scanning can take a very long time. Disk Drill offers me what I need. But appreciate your answer--it is what I needed.
yes data rescue or one of the various data recovery programs may be needed. You may have a back up in time machine or elsewere to restore to a previous state of the machine that may contain the pictures.

I did not know how to use Time machine to get very specific items without getting the entire data to the previous stage. I have decided to use Disk Drill, which offers me what I need. But I appreciate your answer--it is what I needed.
Did you use iPhoto before?
You can open it from Launchpad or from the Applications folder in the Finder.
If not try Stellar Phoenix Photo Recovery Mac

Thank you for the advice, The los occurred during transition to PHOTO when I installed High Sierra. All iPhoto data was supposedly transferred but some was apparently lost. Thank you for your advice.
