samanthaparker1971 , There a few things that could cause this issue, failing fuel pump, clogged fuel filter, bad injectors, faulty coil, clogged catalytic converter, major vacuum leak, EGR valve sticking, IAC control, Oxygen sensor, failing crank sensor, etc. etc.. Best to have the car scanned for trouble codes as a first step to help in finding the fault. Some of the auto parts suppliers offer free code reading like Pepboys, Nappa, Advanced auto parts, etc and some of the guys are very knowledgeable and may have seen the issue often and put you on the right track. If not comfortable dealing with the repair take to a good shop and have a technician take a look, diagnose and estimate repair. Good luck.
