Where is the lid sensor located?

I need to know where is the location of the lid sensor, because my display doesn't go to sleep when is close the lid and i already checked the software and no problem with the software i use the command pmset -g

What model number is printed under the MacBook? Sometimes the hall effect sensor can go faulty as other users have replaced it before and it has solved their problem.

I don't think there is a 12" Macbook am I wrong?

Usually it is on the logic board, but on this model the board is obviously in the middle of the Macbook, so it does not have the hall effect sensor here.

The only thing I can think of it being is a small circuit on the back of the keyboard, under a shield (see picture). I am not 100%, but having repaired a number of these devices, I cannot think of anything else it could be.

EDIT: Had to do a screen replacement on one today, so I took a clearer picture of the components under the shield. The circuit is very similar to the lid sensors on older models, so I think that is it. This is on the keyboard itself, so you would need to swap the keyboard if this is the part which is bad.

There is no way of knowing other than trying a test keyboard, to see if that fixes it. As long as you are positive it is not a software issue, and have tried SMC/PRAM resets.

If you remove this shield, and there is liquid damage around these components, it would be resolved by replacing the keyboard. I haven't heard of these components failing on this model for any other reason though, so it would be strange if liquid was not causing the issue. If you run a magnet along the left side of the Macbook, and it does not sleep (and a setting is not causing this), it would indicate the sensor is bad.

I have an analogous situation. I replaced the display on MacBook 12 2017 with display from MacBook 12 2015. All work well but it cannot get it to sleep after closing the lid as others mentioned above. Is it possible that the display of older model has the magnet in display on different place?

Funny thing is that when i open the lid, it wakes up.

@Aleš Kropáček - A strong possibility! Grab a steel paper clip slid it along the displays edge to locate the magnet. Take note where between the two displays. Use a small rare earth magnet to ID the Hall sensor on the body.

Macbook 12" The sensor is inside the keyboard. Depending on the production year in different places!

  • Model 2015 has the sensor close to the LEFT SHIFT BUTTON.
  • Model 2016/2017 has 2 sensors, one close to LEFT SHIFT BUTTON and one close to the RIGHT SHIFT BUTTON.

I have figured that out, because I've replaced my keyboard on my Macbook 2015 model with the wrong keyboard (for model 2016/2017) and I had some problems: if I close the lid, the screen doesn't go off, nor closes my session; second, the keyboard from 2016/2017 mounted in the 2015 model fits perfect, but when I log into my session, somehow, the SHIFT, CONTROL and OPTION buttons are "pressed down virtually"; so I have to either press all 3 buttons down so they will behave as "they are not pressed/held down". If I don't do that, the touchpad is also affected (the single tap acts like right-click).

Yes, a very weird situation -> Apple thought about that, so it would be very hard to swap between different models.

So I’m running into a similar issue with my 2015 MacBook. When on power or battery if I close the lid and then open, it won’t wake up. However if I leave the lid open or if I run a magnet along the left side, the computer will wake without an issue. I can also use the magnet to put the computer to sleep.
