Computer is on but screen very dark almost back. Tried to reset P ram & also took out memory cards & then re-inserted. Still black screen. What to do?

Can you still see a faint image on the screen? If yes, try AussieMacs suggestion. If that fails than most probably your inverter board is gone.
Look at this MacBook Core 2 Duo Inverter Replacement.
The inverter controls the backlight of the screen and is cheaper than a new LCD. There is, however, the faint change that the backlight itself failed. Than you do have to replace the LCD.

This may sound dumb but have you tried increasing the brightness with the F2 key. otherwise the backlight is dead and you need a new screen here
