The Sega Game Gear portable gaming device was released in 1991 in competition with the Nintendo Game Boy.

Screen has power but no picture

When i turn the game gear on, the screen lights up but only shows blue. I can hear the game audio playing in the background, too.

Is this a replacement screen issue, capacitor or something else?

Thanks!

First off, have the old capacitors been replaced on this machine yet? If not, then that's a good starting point and replace all of them as all of those caps will go eventually.

Besides that this is an interesting one since you can hear the games playing but have a blue screen. This may be an issue with the contrast wheel. I'm sure you've tried adjusting the wheel several times. Have you tried adjusting the wheel and looking at the system at an extreme angle at say about 135° or so? If you can see any kind of a picture at this angle, than I'm fairly positive it's a cap replacement issue. If not, then I would next check the contrast wheel and the solder points. See if the points have lifted, poor soldering or too much solder (cold joint) and even take a can of air to underneath the wheel and electrical.

That's the best I can suggest for now. Hope this helps.

I have it worse. No matter how bright I adjust it, and I put new batteries in. It’s still the same. No Audio no picture. I think I have a broken one :(

Buy a cap kit off Ebay and replace the capacitors. It usually works.

I have this issue in 2 Game Gears. I have recapped dozens and never had an issue. I recapped both of these and still no audio or video out of one and no video out of the other which is the problem I had before recap. Verified more than once the console version, capacitors and solder job. I bought two McWill upgrades and am optimistic about it fixing the no video console but concerned about the no video or audio console. Any suggestions? I have a multimeter but am coming up dry on schematics

You can try a recap to see if it will fix it. New caps run 3 to 5 bucks on ebay. Takes me 30 mins to do a full recap, sometimes it works sometimes its another issue like a dead lcd screen.
