no screen or key board but getting the start up chime

I replaced the hard drive (500 GB 5400 RPM 2.5" Toshiba) that didn't seem to do the trick.

It starts up with a chime and and a light comes on for about 5 sec on the front right outside base. After that the fans run and i can hear and feel the hard drive turning. Other than that nothing. No screen no keyboard lights.

I bought it used and was told it needed a hard drive. When i opened it up the old hard drive was gone.

On the left side you should see a battery tester depress the tester button and see what the it tell's you.

Did you install OS-X on to the HD? If not you'll need to find a friend who has a Mac to create a bootable drive.

In this case I would get a 32 GB or bigger USB thumb drive (or external HD) and have your friend format and install OS-X on it. As you didn't tell us the exact model you have I can't tell you which OS version you'll need (oldest your system will support). You likely can use the newer versions Mavericks (10.9.x) & Yosemite (10.10.x). Make sure your friend tests it to make sure it boots up his system and then copy over to it the OS installer as you'll need it for your system. Use the drive you setup to see if you can get it to boot up your system.

Does the system have memory modules installed? If the drive was pulled I would expect they pulled the RAM too. If not present you'll need put in at least 2GB.

If you got to this point and the system still isn't running lets try doing a SMC reset. Follow this Apple TN: Intel-based Macs: Resetting the System Management Controller (SMC).

With it running use a flashlight to shine light thought the Apple logo on the back of the lid (poor mans backlight). Do you see a faint image of the desktop and the icons on it? If you do then the displays backlight logic needs to be fixed. If not then the logic board maybe bad.

Do you have an external monitor that you can plug in? Give that a try.
