Hi Bonnie,
If your GE refrigerator is cool but not cold, even on the coldest setting, and both the refrigerator and freezer compartments are affected, there are several possible causes to consider. Here are some common issues and steps you can take to diagnose and potentially fix the problem:
- 1. **Check the Temperature Settings**
- Ensure that both the refrigerator and freezer are set to the recommended temperatures (typically around 37°F for the fridge and 0°F for the freezer). Sometimes the settings may be inadvertently changed.
- 2. **Inspect the Door Seals**
- Examine the rubber gaskets around the refrigerator and freezer doors to make sure they are sealing properly. If the seals are dirty, cracked, or damaged, they can let warm air in, which makes it harder for the refrigerator to maintain the correct temperature. Clean the seals with warm, soapy water and check for any gaps or damage. If the seals are damaged, they may need to be replaced.
- 3. **Ensure Proper Airflow**
- Make sure there is enough space around the refrigerator for proper ventilation. The unit should have at least a few inches of space between it and the wall to allow heat to dissipate from the condenser coils.
- Inside the refrigerator and freezer, ensure that vents are not blocked by food items. These vents are crucial for circulating cold air throughout the compartments. Rearrange any items that may be blocking the vents.
- 4. **Clean the Condenser Coils**
- Dust and debris can accumulate on the condenser coils, which are usually located at the back or bottom of the refrigerator. Dirty coils make it harder for the refrigerator to cool effectively.
- To clean the coils, unplug the refrigerator, locate the coils (check your user manual for their exact location), and use a vacuum cleaner with a brush attachment or a coil cleaning brush to remove dust and dirt.
- 5. **Check the Evaporator Fan**
- The evaporator fan, located in the freezer compartment, is responsible for circulating cold air throughout the refrigerator and freezer. If this fan is not working properly, the refrigerator will not cool effectively. Listen for the sound of the fan when the door is open (you may need to press the door switch to activate it). If you don’t hear the fan running, it might be faulty and need to be replaced.
- 6. **Defrost the Freezer**
- If there is a significant buildup of frost in the freezer, it could block the evaporator fan and reduce airflow. This could result in the refrigerator and freezer not cooling properly. Unplug the refrigerator and let it defrost for a few hours, then plug it back in and see if the problem persists.
- 7. **Check the Thermostat and Temperature Sensors**
- A faulty thermostat or temperature sensor can cause the refrigerator to not cool properly. If the thermostat or sensor isn’t detecting the correct temperature, it might not signal the compressor to turn on. This might require a professional technician to diagnose and replace if necessary.
- 8. **Inspect the Compressor**
- The compressor is the part of the refrigerator that circulates refrigerant through the system. If it is not running properly, the refrigerator will not cool. Listen for a humming sound from the back of the refrigerator; this is usually the compressor running. If it’s not running or you hear a clicking sound instead, there might be a problem with the compressor or its start relay.
- 9. **Look for Error Codes**
- Some modern GE refrigerators display error codes if there’s a malfunction. Check the display panel (if your model has one) and refer to the user manual to decode any error messages.
- 10. **Call a Professional**
- If you’ve tried these steps and your refrigerator is still not cooling properly, it may be time to call a professional technician. There could be a more complex issue, such as a refrigerant leak or a malfunctioning compressor, that requires specialized knowledge and tools to repair.
By following these steps, you should be able to identify the issue with your GE refrigerator. If the problem persists, getting professional help is the best course of action to prevent any further damage. Let me know if there's anything else I can assist you with!

my ge profile fridge will cool for about a week and then the temp starts going up where everything in the freezer is thawed out and there is a defrost thing on it but after defrosting it it works good for about a week then the temp goes up again. what would make this happen?

Hi @lilymarie485,
Post your comment as a new question. That way it will get more attention.
Give information such as model number and some more information.
Such as is it only the fridge section that warms up, or the freezer section as well (bit confused when you say everything in the freezer is thawed out but after defrosting it?).
Can you hear the evaporator fan running when the freezer has been defrosted? (inside the freezer section of the fridge - all doors need to be shut, Not the compressor fan on the outside of the fridge)

My freezer is running no problem. My refrigerator compartment is running cool but not cold. I don't hear a fan running when I open the freezer compartment. I tried resetting. Still nothing resolved. What's going on? My fridge was purchased December 2016.

I have had problems with my profile at about the two year mark and now at the 7 year mark it $@$* the bed completely. had the g e repair guys come numerous times and they all said the exact same thing, don't buy this p.o.s. the company doesn't care and the quality is horendous. so now after 7 years I have to lay out 2200 more dollars so my family can have fresh food. of course I cant afford it but g e wont give a &&^&. they don't make stuff like they used to and never will. I have lost all faith in any large company.
